The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a working royal salt mine turned underground world — nine levels reaching 327 metres down, of which visitors walk a route past chapels, chambers and brine lakes carved entirely from rock salt. Its centrepiece, the Chapel of St. Kinga, is a full church 101 metres underground: floor, altars, chandeliers and relief carvings all cut from salt by generations of miners. It was one of the first sites ever placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, in 1978.
History
Salt has been mined at Wieliczka since the 13th century, and for centuries the “white gold” it produced was among the Polish crown’s greatest sources of wealth, run as the royal Kraków Saltworks. Miners cut not only salt but art — chapels so they could pray underground, and later whole sculpted chambers — turning the workings into a subterranean cathedral of salt. Commercial mining wound down in the 20th century; the mine now survives as a museum and UNESCO site, still cool, still glistening, drawing well over a million visitors a year.
