St. Mary’s Basilica (Kościół Mariacki) is the brick Gothic church that defines Kraków’s Main Square — two mismatched towers above the marketplace, a trumpet call on the hour, and inside, the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world. It is a working church and a ticketed monument at once: worshippers enter free at the side; visitors take a timed ticket to the nave and the great altar.
History
A church has stood on this corner of the Rynek since the 13th century; the present brick basilica took its form in the 14th and 15th centuries. Its two towers were never matched — the taller, by legend, the work of a mason who murdered his brother to win the contest. From the taller tower a bugler still plays the hejnał, the Kraków anthem, every hour, breaking off mid-note in memory of a medieval trumpeter said to have been shot through the throat as he sounded the alarm.
