An illuminated underground brine lake in the Wieliczka Salt Mine

Wieliczka Salt Mine: the Tourist Route or the Miners’ Route?

Almost everyone who visits the Wieliczka Salt Mine walks the Tourist Route — and for a first visit, that is the right choice. But there is a second option, the Miners’ Route, and if you know the difference before you book you can pick the one that suits your group. Both are guided, both are timed, and for both you choose your tour language and your entry hour when you book.

The Tourist Route — the classic

This is the route that made Wieliczka famous. Over roughly two hours and a couple of kilometres, a guide leads you down through worked-out chambers to the highlights: the salt chapels, the underground brine lakes, and the vast Chapel of St. Kinga — a whole church carved from rock salt, more than a hundred metres underground. Everything you have seen in photographs of the mine is on this route.

It begins with a descent of about 380 wooden steps (there is a lift for the way back up), and the walking is steady rather than strenuous. It suits almost everyone: families, older visitors, first-timers. If you have one afternoon for Wieliczka, this is it.

The Miners’ Route — hands-on

The Miners’ Route is a different experience. You put on overalls and a helmet with a lamp and explore as a miner would have, with tasks along the way rather than a walk past finished chambers. It is more active and more adventurous, and it comes with age and fitness requirements — check the mine’s own conditions before booking, especially for younger children.

Choose it if you have visited before and want something new, or if your group would rather do than look.

Which one for you?

  • First visit, or a mixed group: the Tourist Route.
  • Travelling with young children: the Tourist Route (check the Miners’ Route age limit before you consider it).
  • Been before, or after something active: the Miners’ Route.

Two things to know for both

It is cool underground all year — around 17 °C — so bring a layer even in a summer heatwave. And popular hours sell out on busy days, so book your language and your time slot ahead rather than turning up and hoping.
